Woman raped at Mahamaya Lake in Mirsarai, one arrested

Police on Thursday afternoon (November 7) arrested one of the three suspects for the alleged gang rape of a young woman in Mahamaya Lake area in Mirsrai upazila of Chittagong.

Cars were pressed into service to arrest the other two suspects, Abdul Quader, police commissioner of Mirsarai police station, said today (Nov 8).

According to police, the incident took place in the Mahamaya Ecopark area, where the victim and her friend from another district were visiting. The couple ventured into the remote areas of Lake Mahamaya, unaware that they were being followed.

Three young men from Durgapur in Mirsrai upazila allegedly followed them and filmed their activities from a distance. At some point, the suspects attacked the couple, restrained the boyfriend and then took turns assaulting the woman, police said.

The traumatized couple reported the incident to the authorities at the lake ticket office, who then informed the police. Police responded quickly, rescued the couple and took them to the police station for safety and further investigation.

OC Quader said, “We have received the young woman’s complaint of rape at Mahamaya Lake. The motorcycle of the suspects was seized on Thursday afternoon soon after the incident and one of the suspects was arrested early today.”

“Cars have been deployed to arrest the other suspects. We will share the details later,” he added.
