Russia calls on the West to negotiate to stop the ‘destruction of the Ukrainian population’

The Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, said on Thursday that the West faces a “choice”: either enter into talks with Moscow over Ukraine or continue the “destruction” of its people.

Shoigu spoke a day after Donald Trump – highly critical of US aid to Kiev – won the US presidential election, raising questions about long-term support for Ukraine.

Moscow has made rapid progress on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine in recent months.

“Now that the situation on the battlefield is not in Kiev’s favor, the West is faced with a choice: continue to finance (Kiev) and destroy the Ukrainian population, or recognize the current reality and start negotiating,” he said. Shoigu, Moscow’s spokesman. ex-defense minister, said.

He spoke at a meeting of a military alliance of former Soviet states.

Shoigu also said that the “collective West is losing its economic, political and moral leadership” and that Western hopes for a Russian defeat had “failed.”

Russia hopes that the West will tire of supporting Kiev militarily.

The Kremlin said on Wednesday it would judge Trump for his “actions” in the Ukraine conflict, with the Republican repeatedly promising a quick end to the conflict if he takes office.

Trump has criticized the billions of dollars in aid the US has sent to Ukraine.

Shoigu was Russia’s defense minister during most of the Ukraine offensive, but was ousted by President Vladimir Putin in May and replaced by economist Andrei Belousov.
