Rafael a strong hurricane in the Gulf; dangerous surf on our beaches

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Hurricane Rafael remains strong in the Gulf of Mexico, but is not expected to impact the central Gulf Coast. We will experience a high risk of rip currents in the coming days, and a high surf advisory has been issued. Waves of 5 to 8 feet are likely, and we may even see some minor beach erosion.

In our weather forecast today we have a small chance of scattered sprinkles, but it will remain largely dry and mostly cloudy. Temperatures remain above average, with highs in the 80s.

Weather headlines:

  • Dangerous surf from Rafael
  • Rafael remains stuck in the Gulf of Mexico
  • Locally warm and muggy conditions
  • A few fronts in our forecast

TODAY:

We start our day very mild and muggy with temperatures in the 70s. This afternoon we will warm quickly to the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies.

The chances of rain today are small, only about 20 to 30%. Most forecast models show that any rain will remain quite light.

WEEKEND:

Our Saturday will be very similar to our Friday, with temperatures once again reaching the low to mid 80s and few rain chances. Skies will again be mostly cloudy.

We could see a few more showers on Sunday as moisture moves in from the Gulf of Mexico in anticipation of an approaching front. The chances of rain are about 30 to 40%. With more rain chances and more cloud cover expected, temperatures likely won’t peak until the upper 70s.

THE LONG TERM OUTLOOK:

A front will pass through from Sunday to Monday, making it drier next Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures during the midweek seem to remain warm despite the frontal passage. Moisture will return to the area late Wednesday ahead of another front. Rain chances are still uncertain with this front, but we are getting indications that the front may cool down late next week.
