The shooting that injured the Jackson officer reportedly started with the suspect shooting his brother

JACKSON, Mich. -A Jackson officer was injured and a suspect was killed in a shootout that reportedly stemmed from a shooting involving the suspect’s brother.

Suspect shoots brother in Lenawee County

On November 6 at 5:09 p.m., the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office reported Jackson County Central Dispatch that a suspect allegedly shot his brother at 4:30 p.m.

A tracking device showed the suspect’s vehicle traveling through Jackson County.

Suspect found in Jackson County, pursuit begins

Jackson officers found the suspect’s maroon van in the 1000 block of Cooper Street on the city’s east side.

Officers coordinated with deputies to stop the vehicle, but as authorities approached the van, the suspect sped away.

A pursuit ensued and within a minute the suspect began shooting at the officers and officers, according to police.

During the chase, several houses and cars were shot at. No residents were injured, but an officer was shot.

Jackson Sergeant shot

According to police, a sergeant was shot at Van Dorn Street and Elizabeth Street at 5:41 p.m.

The bullet is said to have gone through his arm and into his body. He was taken to a local hospital where he is in “good condition,” police said.

Suspect killed during exchange of gunfire

Law enforcement officers were able to restrain the suspect, but multiple shots were exchanged and the suspect was struck.

Life-saving measures were carried out against the suspect at the scene. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The officers and deputies were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, per department policy.

Michigan State Police will investigate.

Pipe bombs found in suspect’s car

Several pipe bombs were found in the suspect’s car. Authorities believe he threw it out of his car during the chase.

If anyone sees them, they should not pick them up and call 911 to report their findings.
