Lady Vols Basketball is off to a winning start in the Kim Caldwell era.

Tennessee earned its second straight win to open the season, defeating UT Martin 90-50 on Thursday at Food City Center.

Ruby Whitehorn led the Lady Vols in scoring and had a double-double by halftime. She finished the night with 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting with 14 rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Tennessee struggled at times on transition defense in the third quarter as UTM scored 17 points, its most in a single quarter. But the Lady Vols’ defensive pressure was generally too much for UTM, which committed 31 turnovers. Tennessee scored 48 points off turnovers.

However, the Lady Vols cleaned up their rebounding and ultimately defeated UTM 53-28, scoring 32 second-chance points.

Jewel Spear once again led the Lady Vols in three-point shooting, going 3-for-9 from deep for 13 points on the night.

Tennessee will have to start the season without two guards. Senior guard Kaiya Wynn was announced before the season with a torn Achilles tendon and a walk-on guard Edie Darby is gone for “an extended period of time” due to a left foot injury.
