HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Watch your speed, that’s the message city leaders are sending to the public to reduce traffic fatalities on Oahu.

The Honolulu City Council approved it Bill 44 on Thursday, lowering speed limits in and around certain public parks on Oahu.

A speed limit of 32 km/h will be imposed on roads adjacent to public parks and school grounds. This is lower than the previous limit of 25 miles per hour.

15 mph speed limits will be in place at Ala Moana and Kailua Beach parks, as well as certain schools.

The bill was first introduced by Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Esther Kia’aina.

“Bill 44, CD2 will help reduce accidents and protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, especially in high-risk areas such as public parks and school zones… By adjusting speed limits to road conditions, we are setting a important step towards safer streets for our community,” said Dos Santos-Tam.

The city’s Department of Transportation Services will be responsible for implementing the changes.

It is unclear when exactly the signs will be changed.
