Wilmington man charged with hit-and-run in Newark after hitting pedestrian

NEWARK, Del. – A Wilmington man is charged with a felony after he allegedly struck a pedestrian with his vehicle and fled the scene in Newark on Oct. 27. Authorities identified the driver as 22-year-old Roger Brown, who now faces charges including assault with a vehicle and leaves the scene. of a hit and run and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a crime, in this case the vehicle used in the incident.

The incident occurred around 12:34 a.m. in the 100 block of East Main Street, where a Newark police officer observed a vehicle spinning its tires and causing smoke to fill the roadway. The driver, later identified as Brown, then accelerated westbound at a high rate of speed. The officer activated his emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but Brown allegedly drove onto Academy Street, where he struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk on East Main Street before fleeing the scene.

The pedestrian initially refused medical treatment, but it was later determined that he had suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision.

After an investigation, Newark police obtained an arrest warrant for Brown on October 31. Justice of the Peace Court #2 charged Brown with multiple offenses, including possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a crime, disregarding the signal of a police officer, vehicular assault in the second degree, and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury, along with several other traffic violations.

Brown remains wanted on these charges as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
