We have entered the last two months of the year and Joker: Folie à Deux has become an unexpected victim of 2024’s unpredictable box office tides.

The likes of Mrs. Web, Argylle And Borderlands have all had difficulty with it, but Joker 2‘s soft US box office opening perhaps the most surprising of all. The direct current The sequel could well rebound in the coming weeks, though it will be difficult with poor word of mouth.

So what has attracted the punters at the box office this year? You may have heard of a movie called Deadpool and Wolverinebut that’s not the highest-grossing film of the year so far.

Sequel to a sports comedy Pegasus 2 was one of the big local releases for this year’s Chinese New Year in February. It nearly doubled the global grosses of its predecessor, which grossed $255 million in 2019.

Family comedy-drama Successor was the big local hit at the Chinese box office this summer, holding the top spot for five consecutive weeks. It is the second highest-grossing film of the year at the local box office.

7. YOLO

This year’s leading film at the Chinese box office is a boxing comedy-drama YOLO with nearly $500 million worldwide. It’s a remake of a Japanese movie 100 yen loveand dominated the Chinese New Year weekend earlier this year.

6. Kung fu panda 4

Kung Fu Panda 4 may not have reached the heights of Kung Fu Panda 2 ($664.8 million), but it did push the entire franchise over the $2 billion mark worldwide. Considering there was an eight-year gap since the third film, it was a decent achievement, even if it was overshadowed by two other animations in 2024 (more on that soon).

5. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was a monster hit at the end of March, even though it had to be fought for Dune: part two. The sequel became the highest-grossing outing in the MonsterVerse to date, as well as the biggest Godzilla or King Kong film ever.

For the first half of 2024 Dune: part two was the biggest film of the year with over $700 million worldwide. The sequel made almost $300 million more than the first film, so that’s no surprise Dennis Villeneuve will return to Arrakis Dune 3.

You just can’t stop the Minions. Only in a franchise like this is that possible Despicable me 4The $968 million revenue seems a bit of a disappointment, considering it fell just short of $1 billion Minions And Despicable me 3 did.

However, the fourth film proved that there are no stronger or more consistent (box office-wise) animated franchises.

Marvel would have had high hopes for the MCU debuts of Deadpool and Wolverine, but even the most optimistic people didn’t expect just how big Deadpool and Wolverine received.

It’s the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and the sixth largest MCU movie ever.

    Talking about mega successes that few expected they would bring us Inside out 2currently the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far.

    It will take some effort to remove it from that title as well because it is the greatest animation of all time with nearly $1.7 billion, also making it by some distance the highest-grossing Pixar film ever.
