Tribal woman 'raped' and burned alive in her home in Manipur

GUWAHATI: A 31-year-old tribal woman, mother of three, was allegedly attacked and raped before being set on fire by armed assailants at her house in Jiribam district of Manipur on Thursday evening.
Police are in the process of shifting the victim’s remains to Silchar in neighboring Assam for forensic tests due to inadequate facilities at home. SP (Jiribam) has informed the District Magistrate that despite the availability of post-mortem facilities in Imphal, it is “very difficult to transport the dead body from Jirbam to Imphal by road via NH-37 due to the ongoing ethnic crisis in the country. the state.”
Jiribam police station has registered a case on an FIR filed by the victim’s husband citing violations including rape and murder on grounds of race, community and gender, destruction of property and criminal trespass after sunset under the BNS . The man’s FIR says his wife was “brutally murdered (raped and burnt alive)” at “our residence”.
The attackers, believed to be from the valley and armed with deadly weapons, invaded the tribal settlement in Zairawn village in Jiribam, terrorizing residents before fatally attacking the helpless victim. They then set fire to 17 homes after indiscriminate gunfire and looted valuables.
“This barbaric act is yet another chilling reminder of the brutal ethnic cleansing campaign,” said Hmar Inpui, the Hmar tribe’s top body.
The Tribal Advocacy Committee (Pherzawl and Jiribam) also denounced the attack on Zairawn village and sought the Center’s intervention to protect the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar people of Jiribam and Pherzawl districts.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), a conglomerate of recognized tribes in Churachandpur, confirmed the discovery of the victim’s charred remains at the family’s residence in the morning.
