Driver jailed after killing pedestrian on Edinburgh road and fleeing

A driver has been jailed after killing a pedestrian and fleeing the scene.

Emergency services were called to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Easter Road in Edinburgh at around 2.40am on June 19.

Kyle Middlemass, 20, was taken to the hospital; however, he died 10 days later in Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary.

Officers tracked the driver, Ralph Fairhurst, later that day after he left the area.

The 26-year-old was sentenced to four years and six months at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday, November 7, for causing death by dangerous driving.

Sergeant Paul Ewing of Road Policing said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the young man who lost his life, and I hope today’s sentencing brings them some comfort and allows them to move on.

“Ralph Fairhurst showed absolutely no respect for the law and his reckless actions highlight the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and the lasting impact it has on those involved, along with their families and friends.”
