Mark Cavendish: British cycling legend announces retirement with final race this weekend | British news

Sir Mark Cavendish has announced his retirement from professional cycling.

The 39-year-old will race for the final time this weekend at the Tour de France Criterium in Singapore on November 10.

Mr Mark was initially scheduled to retire in 2023, but then postponed it crash in that year’s Tour de France.

The British cycling legend ended this season with a record-breaking 35th career tour stage in what he said at the time would “probably” be his last race.

But after receiving his knighthood from the Prince of Wales on October 2, he said: “It would be great fun to race as a knight commander.”

The Manx sprinter, whose professional cycling career began in 2005, shared the news on Instagram, posting a video saying: “My racing career… has completed.”

He added: “Sunday will be the last race of my professional cycling career.

“I am fortunate to have been doing what I love for almost twenty years and I can now say that I have achieved everything I can on the bike.

“Cycling has given me so much and I love the sport, I have always wanted to make a difference in it and now I am ready to see what the next chapter has in store for me.

“Thank you, everyone, for all the support, always. Cav”.
