Lightning kills one student and injures six in Kassanda

At least one student has been confirmed dead and six others injured after lightning struck Kalwana Primary School in Kassanda District.

Police have identified the victim of the incident on Friday afternoon (2 p.m.) as a primary school student, Jackeline Namawejje, 14.
The survivors are; Sarah Naiga, 13; Scovia Namaganda, 10; Prossy Nalubega, 13; Joan Nabankema, 14; Roden Ntuuyo,13 – all primary students and Mary Navuga,13 from fourth grade.

Preliminary findings by the police show that the Namawejje was in the third grade classroom at around 2pm on Friday, along with other students and their class teacher Sarah Alinyikira Mugenyi, who was checking books for the students while it was raining.

To the shock of everyone in the classroom, lightning struck through the classroom window, killing one student and injuring six others.

“The injured were rushed to Lwanjiri Health Center III for treatment and to Kassanda Health Center IV for treatment, and well enough they are making steady progress,” Ms Racheal Kawala, Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, said on Saturday.
The latest tragic incident comes six days after lightning killed at least 14 people and injured 34 others during a church service in Zone 8, Block 2 of Palabek Settlement Camp in Lamwo District last Sunday.
