A schoolgirl is stranded in Turkey with a broken back after being hit by a paraglider in a freak accident while on holiday. Lily Nichol, 15, suffered serious injuries after a paraglider landed on her while she was eating with her mother, Lyndsey Logan, and sister, Meggan, at a restaurant in the city. The 15-year-old, from Chester-le-Street, suffered a broken back, broken ribs and a brain haemorrhage following the incident and remains in hospital. Hopital. Her family are desperately trying to raise £45,000 to pay for the operations she needs before she can fly home.


Unfortunately, the family had not taken out holiday insurance before their trip. Mum Lyndsey claims the family have been told they cannot bring Lily home until she has undergone two extremely costly operations. Lyndsey told it ChronicleLive how they had looked forward to returning to the northeast last night before disaster struck.

She said: “Lily will need at least two operations. That will cost £45,000. And without the surgeries, we can’t bring her home. It happened when we were having a last meal before traveling to the airport. Meggan had given her a slice of pizza. Before we knew it there was only a paraglider there.”


Lily is taking a series of painkillers, her mother says, as she waits for the surgeries she needs. In addition to medical care, Lyndsey and her eldest daughter must finance their stay in Turkey and transport to the hospital. Back in England, Lyndsey’s family desperately tries to support them. Cousin Jade Storey said: ‘You just don’t think things like this can happen so close to home. It’s horrible.’
