Fact Check: This video does NOT show an Indian immigrant being arrested in Greece

A video which has been widely shared online and claims an Indian immigrant in Greece is arrested for sexually assaulting a minor. Share the viral clip on X, one person wrote“An Indian immigrant was arrested in Greece for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old minor Christian girl.”

India Today Fact Check found that this 2023 video from the Greek island of Kos shows an immigrant from Bangladesh being arrested for the rape and murder of a 27-year-old woman.

OUR PROBE

A reverse search for keyframes from the viral clip led us to one Greek City Times Report published on June 22, 2023. According to the report, the man featured in the viral clip was arrested for raping and murdering a 27-year-old Polish woman who worked at a hotel on the Greek island of Kos.

A subsequent search led us to several other news items about the case. We found no report of an Indian immigrant being involved in the crime. However, according to several reports, the man was identified as an immigrant from Bangladesh, 32-year-old Salauddin S.

According to a report in the Dhaka Standa 27-year-old woman went missing on June 12, 2023. Later on June 18, her body was found, killed by strangulation. Local police said Salauddin’s roommate assisted them in the investigation.

So it is clear that the video does not show an Indian immigrant.
