Surveillance video shows moments before the man was killed in an officer-involved shooting

New surveillance video obtained by FOX 29 shows the moments before Philadelphia police shot and killed a man they say was armed with a gun.

One video shows three Philadelphia Police SUVs pulling up behind the black pickup at 52nd and Woodland Streets on Sunday evening. The officers get out and you hear screaming and then the sound of several gunshots.

Before the fatal shooting, the confrontation with the 47-year-old man began about a mile away, just before 6:15 p.m. Sunday evening, according to police. A woman reported what police are calling a domestic disturbance in the area of 54th Street and Chancellor Street. Police say they called 911 after the man fired a shot into the home.

Police say the 47-year-old then carjacked a man in his black pickup truck. That man, Tony, tells FOX 29 he was in the area to pick up his friend when his passenger door opened. He says the man wasn’t in the mood and wouldn’t take his money when he offered it.

“I had my hands in the air and I just said, ‘What are you doing, calm down, calm down,’ you know, and he just wouldn’t calm down,” Tony says. “When the police came, he still had the gun pointed and was pointing it at everyone.”

Both police and Tony say the man tried to shoot but was unsuccessful. Police say an 18th Precinct officer fired a shot and it’s unclear if the man was hit.

Police say they then chased the vehicle to 52nd and Woodland Streets, where the man got out of the truck and attempted to run toward this empty lot, when an officer and sergeant from the 18th Precinct fired shots.

In another video obtained by FOX 29, bystanders can be seen running, then the man turning the corner appears to be running with his back to the officers.

According to police, the man was rushed to hospital, where he died. A firearm was found at the scene. Police say it is unclear whether the man was shot during the first confrontation, the second or both.

A neighbor who asked that we use only his first name says he is questioning the shooter.

“There was no weapon visible,” he said. “Wherever they found it on his body, the waistband, okay, so what? The man retreated, he ran away.’

Back in the neighborhood Monday, Shirlene Lewis, a member of the Chosen Generation Church on the block, says she is unsettled about the gunfire so close.

“It could have been a child, it could have been an older person walking by, and that person could have been shot,” she said. “I just pray that people stick together, stop the violence, stop the killing, stop the shooting.”
