Sacramento Kings announce Malik Monk injury update

Sacramento Kings announce Malik Monk injury update

The Sacramento Kings picked up a huge overtime victory over the Phoenix suns on Sunday night, taking their record to 6-4 before facing the San Antonio Spurs on the second leg of a back-to-back series on Monday.

While Sunday’s win in Phoenix gave the Kings a big boost, star 6-man Malik Monk suffered an injury that undermined the victory.

Monk suffered a sprained ankle in the second quarter of Sunday’s win, sidelining him for the rest of the game and Monday’s game in San Antonio. Now the Kings have provided an update on Monk’s injury:

Via Kings PR: “Kings guard Malik Monk suffered a moderate right ankle sprain during the second quarter against the Phoenix Suns on November 10. X-rays revealed no structural damage. Monk will be listed as out and will be out in two weeks be reevaluated in weeks.”

The Kings are certainly glad Monk’s injury wasn’t worse, but it will be cruel to have to play at least two weeks without their only key contributor on the bench.

Sacramento’s starting unit was questionable early in the new season, so it could be a disaster if the 2023-24 NBA Sixth Man of the Year runner-up is sidelined.

The Kings will have to rely on Keon Ellis to lead their second unit with Monk sidelined, and Jordan McLaughlin will likely take on a bigger role next to Ellis this offseason.

Sacramento will play seven games over the next two weeks, including two NBA Cup Group Play matches. The Kings will certainly miss their bench spark, but Sacramento will still need to pick up some wins in his absence.
