Kyle Shanahan says the side incident has been blown out of proportion: We’re doing fine

The 49ers did something you don’t see every Sunday: they got teammates working on the sideline.

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel confronted by a teammate Jake Moody on the sideline after the kicker missed a third field goal against the Bucs. Long snapper Taybor Pepper defended Moody, prompting Samuel to punch Pepper and grab him around the neck.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said immediately after the game that he didn’t feel the need to say anything about it, but did so Monday after seeing coverage of the teammate-on-teammate crime. Shanahan said he is pleased with the state of play.

“I talked to the guys about it, talked to some guys on the team, and we squashed it, and we are good,” Shanahan said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “I think it was a bit of an overreaction. You never want Deebo to punch anyone on our own team or anything like that, but Deebo didn’t say anything bad to Jake either, as it sounded. He met him on the field and told them to ‘lock in’, the same thing I’ll say to an attacking player who’s just dropped some balls or taken some penalties or something.

“You never sit there to belittle anyone or embarrass anyone. You try to challenge guys you believe in. That’s how we talk to each other and tell someone to focus and focus because we know you can do this.”

Shanahan also defended Pepper’s role in the confrontation.

“I like Pep’s intentions,” Shanahan said. “I mean, he’s got his back, but I think he kind of misinterpreted what Deebo did to him and kind of overreacted a little bit, and Deebo didn’t like that and took it out of his face, and that’s kind of about where it ended up .”

Shanahan said the team will not fine anyone for the incident, which he called no big deal.

Moody kicked the 44-yard game winner on the final play and went 2-for-5 in his return from a high ankle sprain.
