Firefighters clear a crash involving two semi-trucks and a freight train in Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) – The traffic chaos in Hawthorne got worse tonight before it got better.

Firefighters cleaned up a spill after a collision between two semi-trucks and a freight train.

Officials say the crash at the intersection of Southeast 71st Avenue and 221st Street injured one person, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Maintenance work had closed the CSX railroad crossing at US Highway 301, where traffic, including heavy trucks, detoured through local streets.

FDOT officials say the closure should continue through Thursday.

Residents are frustrated with the traffic congestion, including former Mayor Matt Surrency, who posted on social media that crews should have made the repairs in phases.
