Four dead and two seriously injured after car falls off bridge in Assam

The car, which was traveling from Dibrugarh to Tinsukia, fell into an under-construction culvert.

Four people, including a five-year-old child, were killed and two seriously injured on Tuesday when a car fell from an under-construction culvert in Assam’s Tinsukia.

Six members of a family were traveling from Bihar to Tinsukia for a wedding when the accident occurred.

“The accident happened around 4 am on the Dihingia Gaon bypass along the Tinsukia-Dibrugarh route. The car, which was traveling from Dibrugarh to Tinsukia, suddenly veered off the road and plunged into an under-construction culvert,” said an official police officer.

According to police, two family members were seriously injured and taken to Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh for treatment.

“There were six passengers in the Swift Dzire vehicle, including a five-year-old child. Five victims were estimated to be between 40 and 45 years old. We have started an investigation,” police said.

The dead have been identified as Mohan Shah, Rajesh Gupta, Montu Shah and child Arthav Gupta.

Locals had launched a rescue operation and helped the injured reach the hospital.

A police officer told news agency PTI that the incident probably took place due to poor visibility on the road due to dense fog and lack of proper signage. Local residents have raised concerns about the incomplete condition of the bypass, particularly the unfinished culvert.
