Just in: 13 feared dead as mine site collapses on plateau, details emerge

• Mr Riti expressed deep sadness over the recorded deaths, adding that the victims, mainly young people between the ages of 18 and 30, were seeking a better livelihood amid increasing hardship.

No fewer than thirteen people have been killed in a collapsed mining site in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA). Plateau stands.

JoshHua Riti, the LGA chairman, confirmed the unfortunate development to the press in Jos, the state capital, on Monday, November 11.

Mr Riti, who expressed sadness over the number of recorded deaths, said the incident took place last Saturday, November 9, PremiumTimes reported.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the collapsed mine site is located on the border between Bassa, Jos South and Jos North LGAs.

According to the chairman, seven of the deceased were from Bassa LGA.

“This is an unfortunate incident, these youths were just looking for a livelihood.

“They went out to put their energy to good use to support and cope with the current economic problems in the country, but died prematurely.

“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” he said.

Most of the deaths were young people between 18 and 30 years old.
