Kimbal Musk, chef and restaurateur brother of Elon Musk, opens Austin restaurant

Kimbal Musk, chef and restaurateur brother of Elon Musk, just opened the newest location of The kitchen in Austin’s tallest skyscraper.

“Austin is like a second home to me,” Musk said. “I am excited to bring The Kitchen to this vibrant community.”

The Kitchen is an 8,000-square-foot, two-story restaurant located at 400 W. 6th Street in downtown Austin. The American bistro has locations in Denver, Boulder, Chicago and now Austin.

“The Kitchen is a restaurant I started in Boulder, Colorado 20 years ago and is now opening in Austin 20 years later,” Musk said. “This is the first one we have opened in ten years. So we have Boulder, Denver and Chicago and we just want to be a restaurant that works for the local community.

Chef Michael Bertozzi prepares seasonal American dishes with global influences. The menu features shared plates that combine flavors from Peru, Morocco and Japan with local Texas ingredients, including Akaushi beef, Texas-raised quail and Iberico pork, wild-caught seafood and East Coast cold-water oysters.

“We make shared plates from farm to table. We decided to do it in Austin because it’s Austin. We worked hard to make sure our steaks were good. Because you have to have a good steak here, but we are not a steakhouse,” said Musk.

The kitchen is open daily for dinner from 4 p.m., with brunch and lunch at a later time.

“I think the community here is very special and I’m happy to be a part of it,” Musk said.
