The Surprise Grand Theft Auto update finally fixes the worst problem in San Andreas

My expectations are high for GTA 6. We’re heading back to Vice City (albeit a reimagined, modernized version) and, based on Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s ability to spin a compelling, epic crime drama in the past has only gotten better ten years. But the shadow of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition still hangs high in my memory. The ‘enhanced’ visuals effectively robbed GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas of all their identity and atmosphere. Forget the bugs and other technical issues. Even when they ran correctly, the new versions of the classic Grand Theft Auto games only looked worse. But now, thanks to a surprise update from Rockstar, things have suddenly improved.

The GTA 6 release date is coming soon, and for anyone who hasn’t played the rest of the series yet, almost every Grand Theft Auto game – especially the very first one, all the way back in 1997 – is definitely worth your time. If you have some of the. best open world games in history, GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is certainly the most accessible way, with the original versions of Vice City, San Andreasand GTA 3 has unfortunately been removed from digital stores. And now, thanks to the new update, one of the worst problems in Rockstar’s remaster set has been fixed: the terrible sky and lighting effects have been replaced.

It was especially noticeable in San Andreas. The warm, orange hue of the 2004 original was replaced in the Definitive Edition with a colder, muddier color palette that robbed the entire game of its signature style. Now, however, there is a new option in the Definitive Edition to enable ‘classic lighting’. This makes every game in the bundle look much more like it used to – and as it should.

The feature was first implemented for the mobile and Netflix versions of the Definitive Edition, but has now been ported to PC and consoles. A handy comparison can be seen in the video below, uploaded by YouTuber ‘Fess Beast.’
