Topeka police identify city’s 17th murder victim of 2024

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Topeka police on Tuesday identified the city’s 17th murder victim of 2024.

Police said Ricky R. Washington Jr., 45, of Topeka, was shot and killed around 9 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of SW Huntoon.

Washington was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

One other person was injured in the shooting and taken to a local hospital. The person reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the shooting continued Tuesday.

Further details about Sunday’s shooting were not available Tuesday morning.

By this time a year ago, the capital had recorded 33 murders and ended 2023 with a record 35 murders.
