Trump’s plan for Russia’s war in Ukraine must be taken seriously, the Finnish president says

Donald Trump should be taken seriously when he talks about ending the war in Ukraine, Finnish President Alexander Stubb told Bloomberg on November 12.

Trump Victory in the 2024 US presidential election was secured, further increasing uncertainty for Ukraine over the future of Western military aid and its defense against Russia’s ongoing large-scale invasion.

But after a phone call with Trump on November 11, Stubb said his intentions after taking office in January 2025 are clear.

“We inside Europe and the rest of the world must understand that Donald Trump is very serious about reaching a peace deal as soon as possible,” he said.

“There is an opportunity for these negotiations between the election and Inauguration Day.”

Trump has repeatedly promised to end the war”within 24 hours‘, and while he has not yet detailed a plan, it is expected to largely involve Ukraine ceding land to Russia.

In his interview along with Bloomberg, Stubb gave four conditions for peace in Ukraine, including territory where “we don’t know where things will end up,” security guarantees, justice and the “low-hanging fruit… reconstruction.”

Trump signals a departure from his predecessor’s foreign policy direction expected to appoint Republican Senator Marco Rubio as the next US Secretary of State.

Rubio said on air shortly after Trump’s victory that Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine has reached a “stalemate” and “must be brought to an end.”

He also voted against the US$61 billion aid package for Ukraine, which was ultimately passed in April 2024.
