What did Boomer Esiason say about Aaron Rodgers? Radio host claims Jets QB ‘sucked the air out of New York’

It’s safe to say that Boomer Esiason isn’t a fan of the way Aaron Rodgers has impacted the Jets’ locker room.

The former CBS analyst and current New York radio host was critical of the Jets quarterback throughout the 2024 season. First he called Rodgers for his relationship with former head coach Robert Salehwho was fired after five weeks. He then shot the QB behind him exclaimed former Jets wide receiver Mike Williams during a post-match press conference.

With the Jets coming off an embarrassing loss on the road to the Cardinals, Esiason takes aim at Rodgers again.

New York is currently 3-7, and there isn’t much else the Jets can do for the veteran QB. The team already fired its head coach and signed Rodgers’ former teammate, Davante Adams, at the deadline. It certainly feels like a low point for the organization (again), and Esiason is pointing the finger at Rodgers.

Here’s more about what he had to say.

What did Boomer Esiason say about Aaron Rodgers?

Esiason took issue with the Jets quarterback during his recent spot on WFAN, a radio station in New York. The former NFL quarterback said the locker room is giving too much “respite” to the soon-to-be 41-year-old, and that his declining play is hurting the team.

“I hate to say it, it’s like Aaron Rodgers completely sucked the air out of the building,” Esiason said. “And I think so many guys are turning away from who he is in their minds. In their minds and in my mind, he’s a first-ballot Hall-of-Fame player; one of the great quarterbacks when he was in his prime was.

“There are very few people who throw the ball like him. And I used to say that Dan Marino, Joe Namath and Aaron Rodgers all threw the ball very differently than everyone else, like we’ve never seen anything like it. And I’m going to my Grave still thought those three players were so special when they threw the ball, and the way they looked at throwing the ball was just so natural and amazing.

Rodgers certainly has the resume to be the star of the show. He is a Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP and four-time NFL MVP. However, it is clear that his prime is far behind him. Not only is Rodgers the oldest player in the league, but he also has a torn Achilles tendon – not an easy injury to bounce back from, especially considering his age.

Esiason pointed out that Mike Williams, who was traded to the Steelers at the deadline, seemed so much happier in his one game with Pittsburgh than he did all season with New York, and that perfectly summed up what Rodgers has done to help the Jets -Dressing room.

“Since he got here the last two years, every player on this team has deferred everything to him,” Esiason said. “And the reason I say that is because Russell Wilson said something about Mike Williams yesterday. It was reported during the game that when Mike Williams came to Pittsburgh, he showed up with such a big smile – and he was so happy.” For example, he was so unaffected by playing for the Jets, with the Jets, for Aaron Rodgers, that he makes the game-winning touchdown catch over his left shoulder in an astonishing series of events.

“Because the reason he’s on the field is because the guy who would have been there on the field gets hurt in the last game – and that’s the only reason he’s there. And Russell Wilson has the confidence to give him the football, and it was a game-winning touchdown pass. What Russell was talking about, Mike Williams, actually gives you a real perspective of what’s going on there in that locker room for the Jets.

With seven games left on the schedule, the season is not over for the Jets. However, it will take a huge turnaround from the entire team, not just Rodgers, to stay in the playoff hunt.
