New Jersey cops shoot dogs and try to stop each other from mauling 10-year-old boy in motel room

SAYREVILLE, NJ – A police shooting is under investigation in Middlesex County after officers intervened to stop two dogs from mauling a 10-year-old boy at a Sayreville motel Monday afternoon, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.

Sayreville police responded to a 911 call from a family member staying at the Knights Inn in Sayreville around 11:20 a.m. The caller reported that their child was being attacked by their dogs in one of the motel rooms. Officers discovered the dogs were actively attacking the child, prompting them to use firearms to end the attack.

During the course of the incident, one of the responding officers struck a ricochet, resulting in a superficial wound, officials said. Both the 10-year-old boy and the officer were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where they are in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

“Officers acted quickly to prevent further harm to the child,” Ciccone said, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing. Details about the dog breeds, the family’s relationship with the dogs and details of the attack were not immediately available.

Authorities urge anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to contact Detective Stephanie Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3316.
