FC Cincinnati player dies after crash in October

Major League Soccer player Marco Angulo, a defender who helped FC Cincinnati win the Supporters’ Shield last season, died Monday evening after injuries sustained in an October car crash in Ecuador that killed two others. He was 22.

Angulo was a passenger in a car that crashed into a metal fence on an Ecuadorian highway on October 7. newspaper El Universo in Ecuador reported that Angulo suffered serious head injuries and a lung contusion as a result of the incident.

Angulo was loaned out by FC Cincinnati and played for Ecuadorian team LDU Quito this year. He also played for the Ecuadorian national team.

“It is with deep pain and sadness that we inform you of the death of our beloved Marco Angulo,” the spokesperson said. LDU Quito posted on social media late Monday evening. “We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”

The Ecuadorian Football Association said this Angulo “defended the colors of our country at every opportunity he got. Marco was not only an excellent player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts.”

FC Cincinnati in a statement Tuesday said it is “deeply saddened by the loss of Marco – a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate. He was a cheerful, friendly young man who lit up every room he entered.”

Major League Soccer also released a statement On Tuesday, he offered his condolences to Angulo’s “wife and son, as well as his entire family, friends, teammates and the football community.”
