How Bill Bailey transformed his dated 1960s kitchen into a sleek, cozy space

The couple inherited the 1960s building from Kristin’s parents and wanted to keep it as a central meeting place for regular meetings. “It is a large family home that belonged to my in-laws and where I have enjoyed many happy years of holidays, birthdays, Christmas and New Years,” Bill explains. “Three generations have had many great times here, and now, with the new generation, I hope there will be many more. It is our duty to continue that tradition.”

As expected of a home built more than 60 years ago, the previous kitchen was not designed with modern entertaining in mind, and had an awkward layout that did not lend itself to comfortably entertaining guests in a fluid and seamless manner. In addition, the outdated wooden cabinets ran along the back wall and did not provide enough storage space for a modern household, and much of the room was taken up by an oversized central dining table that failed to maximize space. The color palette of brown and cream was stuck in the past, and the thick, patterned curtains on either side of the windows obscured rather than took advantage of the spectacular views – something that Bailey, an avid birdwatcher, obviously wanted to emphasize.
