Man rescued after raft deflated on Chocolay Township lake

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – A man found stranded on an island in Lake la Vasseur Tuesday morning is safe.

Around 9:40 a.m., crews from the Chocolay Fire and Rescue Department, DNR and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to Lake la Vasseur in Chocolay Township with reports of a person trapped on an island near the lake.

The man says he decided to go duck hunting on the island around 6 a.m. with an inflatable kayak. He says that when he arrived on the island, he deflated the kayak and the air valves fell out and got lost in the mud, preventing him from returning to shore.

The man says he had to call the US Coast Guard to get back on land.
