Moline police detain a student with a BB gun outside the high school

Moline police are crediting a quick-thinking student with alerting them this morning to another student on a city bus who had a BB gun.

According to a department news release, Moline police received a 911 call around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 from a student on a Metrolink city bus. The student was from another school district, but reported that a Moline student pointed a gun at the bus. The student gave the officers a description of the suspect and the bus number they were driving.

Officers stopped the suspect outside John Deere Middle School and discovered they had a BB gun that looked identical to a real gun. There is no danger to the students and lessons have not been disrupted.

“We commend the student who provided the information to police so that we could quickly resolve the incident,” the statement said. “The caller did exactly what the police ask of the public; if you see something, say something. By calling 911, the tipster was able to alert the police, who were able to take immediate action.”

The case remains under investigation by the Moline Police Department’s Youth Unit. The suspect’s name has not been released due to his age.
