Officer involved in fatal bicycle accident, on administrative leave

SHELBURNE, Vt. (WCAX) – Shelburne police say an officer involved in a fatal crash involving a bicyclist has been placed on administrative leave.

Investigators say Shelburne Police Sgt. Kyle Kapitanski, 41, was on duty and driving his cruiser when he struck a bicyclist early Monday morning in South Burlington.

The cyclist, Sean Hayes, 38, of Burlington, died at the scene.

On Tuesday, Shelburne police said Kapitanski has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the crash by Vermont State Police.

On Monday, troopers said it was raining and dark and the road was wet at the time of the crash.

There’s no word yet on whether charges will be filed.
