The first episode of FX’s “American Sports Story” is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. from The Boston Globe and Wondery.

The 10-episode limited series chronicles the rise and fall of… NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the diverse aspects of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide and their legacy in sports and American culture, according to FX.

In the season finale, new lawyers and a second trial offer unexpected hope, but Aaron’s troubled mind struggles to withstand the weight of his deepest secrets.

The former New England Patriots tight end was convicted of the murder of semi-professional football player Odin L. Lloyd in 2015. Lloyd was the boyfriend of Hernandez’s fiancée’s sister.

Days after he was acquitted in a second trial on charges of shooting two men in a car near a Boston nightclub, Hernandez died by suicide in a maximum security prison in Massachusetts in 2017.
