Wyatts Towing, a Colorado company accused of predatory practices, has been sold

DENVER – Wyatts Towing, once the state’s largest towing company and which has been investigated and repeatedly accused of predatory practices, has been sold.

The Public Utilities Commission told Denver7 Investigates on Tuesday that Wyatts had been sold to Elite Towing.

“The PUC has been working to resolve outstanding regulatory issues involving Wyatt’s Towing, with consumer protection at the heart of such actions,” a spokesperson wrote in an email.

The Colorado Attorney General’s Office also confirmed to Denver7 Investigates that Wyatts notified the office of an ownership change earlier this year, but did not name the new owner.

Wyatts had one $1 million settlement agreement last year with Attorney General Phil Weiser’s office after an investigation found the company had illegally engaged in deceptive and unfair business practices for years. Much of that money was intended to pay back customers.

Wyatts’ attorney did not respond to a request for comment and a call to Wyatts Towing’s main line was not returned. The northern location of Wyatts is now marked as “permanently closed” on Google, but the southern location does not say the same.

When Denver7 called Elite Towing to get information, a representative said Elite had merged with Wyatts and purchased all of its accounts.

Last week the The AG’s office announced that people who were victims of the Wyatts’ business practices would see checks in the mail in the coming days.

“Wyatt’s trolling broke the law to make a quick buck. That’s not okay. People are missing out on hundreds of thousands of dollars because they were charged fees they should never have been charged,” Weiser previously told Denver7 Investigates.

Denver7 Investigates has been reporting on Wyatts for over a year, exposing his web of companies that oversaw all parts of the towing processfrom managing the parking lots, towing the vehicles and selling unclaimed cars at auction.

“Wyatts Towing acquired and sold thousands of vehicles throughout Colorado, often making it impossible for owners to get to work or take their children to school. Their exit from the market is good news and an important step toward responsibility,” said Zach Neumann, co-founder of the Community Economic Defense Project.
