Do you want to get away? Consider staying overnight at an onsite restaurant serving Midwestern comfort food

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – If you’re looking for a family vacation close to home, perhaps during the holidays, you might want to put the Country Cabin Restaurant on your list. It combines Midwestern comfort food and rental cabins for some time away from the city.

“Our goal is really to have an experience,” says Phil Roberts, owner of The Country Cabin. “You know, whether it’s a culinary experience, a visual experience, a social experience. You know, our servers are great. They do a great job in taking care of the customer. We don’t take our food lightly. We always try to improve it.”

The Country Cabin Restaurant and Lodging is located northwest of Hiawatha next to a quiet fishing lake at 2534 Kestrel Rd., but no vacation would be complete without good food.

Owners Phil and Sara Roberts say they specialize in prime rib and ribeye steaks, but also serve Midwestern and country favorites like Chicken Fried Steak, Pork Tenderloin sandwiches, Fried Catfish and burgers.

“Any day of the week we will always recommend our onion rings,” says Phil Roberts. “We get a lot of compliments about them. They are our number one seller. If it’s a weeknight, grab a burger. We have great burgers. Our Chicken Fried Steak is phenomenal. If it’s a weekend and you’re a red meat eater and you want a piece of steak, go for the prime rib…and our Rib Eyes are phenomenal too.”

“People love our salmon too,” says Sara Roberts. “We like a Bourbon Glaze Salmon and it is excellent.”

“Our goal is to put a new spin on Midwestern cuisine,” said Phil Roberts. “Our goal is to make sure it is recognizable yet different. Where it is just a little more exciting than usual. {On Thursday} we have a Chicken Bacon and Leek Pot Pie and then we put a pretzel croissant on top as a crust, so it’s recognizable, but still it’s a bit of a twist with the leek in it, and the pretzel on top.”

The property has six cabins: four small cabins, a medium one for a family of four with a king and queen bed, and the ‘full house’ for six with a king, a queen and two twins.

Reservations, catering and cabin booking can be made on The website of the Landhut or by phone at 785-742-4320.

Larry Oltjen has been a customer of The Country Cabin since its inception and enjoys seeing the staff and the food.

‘There are steaks. You know, there are shrimp. That’s all good,” Oltjen said. “So we order that when we come, but now they are also more specialized in sandwiches. So they are good.”

The Country Cabin now offers catering and a food truck, with a minimum of 30 employees.

The Roberts have seen and housed clients primarily from Northeast Kansas, Kansas City, Nebraska and Missouri.

The Country Cabin was opened in 1997 by Phil Roberts’ parents. Phil unfortunately took over the restaurant after his father passed away about four years ago. Phil says some of the recipes were unfortunately not passed down to him before his father passed away, but he plans to carry on and continue serving the same menu his family has enjoyed for 27 years.

“We want people to feel comfortable here. When you enter, you become part of the family. You know, we want you to be able to come stay at the cabins or call me, “Hey, Phil, I’m coming out for happy hour. Is it okay if the kids go fishing?’ Yes, come out, hang out, relax, enjoy the property and have a good time.

Opening hours are:

  • Tuesday to Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Closed on Sunday and Monday.

Happy hour is also on Friday afternoon from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
