Wednesday will bring stronger winds for some

Some lingering showers are expected today, followed by a warm front moving in this evening which will increase snow levels. Persistent rain and strong winds will prevail tonight and tomorrow, with gusts of up to 100 km/h along the coast and up to 72 km/h in inland valleys. A high wind warning is in effect for the coast from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. tomorrow, with a high wind warning for the Valleys and Portland metro area during the same period. Sustained wind speeds on the coast can reach 65 km/h, and in the valleys up to 40 km/h.

The extended forecast continues with a cool, rainy weather pattern typical for mid-November. There are indications that a weak ridge will try to build up on Friday and Saturday, causing a short period of dry weather. However, a trough moving in from the Gulf Saturday night will bring a chance for late-day showers on Saturday and another rainy day on Sunday. A few showers may linger until Monday. Another weak ridge could try to establish itself on Tuesday, although it could struggle to become the dominant weather pattern from the previous lows.

Highs will cool to the upper 40s to low 50s, marking the first time this season that highs could dip into the 40s. Nighttime temperatures will also be cooler, with rural areas in the inland valleys near Eugene likely to see freezing temperatures, while the Willamette Valley and Portland metro areas will remain warmer, with lows in the upper 30s.

FIRST WEATHER WARNING: We’re calling a coastal FAWD on Wednesday due to a combination of strong southerly winds (though not really damaging) PLUS scattered thunderstorms moving onshore all day tomorrow. As we have seen in the past, these can include hail or a waterspout. Just a real active day on the beach.

We’re also going to call it a First Alert weather MORNING in the Willamette Valley south of Portland. Winds will be strong, so there will likely be some power outages SOUTH of the metro. We are not including the urban area, as we expect relatively light winds somewhere north of approximately the Newberg to Wilsonville to Molalla line. Even in the valley, it is likely that we will only see wind gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. There is a wind warning in the valley, not a high wind warning.

It will be rainy tonight and showers will continue tomorrow, but not enough to cause flooding. In the urban area we will have a normal wet/showery and slightly windy commute tomorrow morning.
