Angelina County commissioners approve demolition of the old tax office

ANGELINA COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) – Since the Angelina County Commissioners Court and Tax Office moved to their new building in downtown Lufkin, the old Angelina County tax office has sat empty, with the county elections just above it.

“We renamed it the Angelina County Elections Administration, so we want to implement that,” said Angelina County Judge Keith Wright.

During Tuesday morning’s court hearing, commissioners agreed to demonstrate the interior of the old tax office and solicit bids for new flooring, paint and minor carpentry.

“Take out and remove all cabinets and countertops to create a large space,” Judge Wright said.

Angelina County Elections Administrator Terri Jordan says the additional space will allow early voting to take place again at their location, which was not an option due to lack of space.

“Our office will be more involved in early voting with the people here rather than running around to different locations,” Jordan said.

Jordan says they will move their office downstairs to the old tax office, with more than half of the new space used for early voting.

“We’re happy to be able to get a bigger space, spread out a little bit more and have more work space to run elections and prepare for elections,” Jordan said.

Angelina County Judge Keith Wright says the timeline for the demo and bidding will depend on scheduling labor availability.
