Victim identified after fatal crash, ‘scuffle’ involving DPS on I-10 near Tempe

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) Investigators have identified a man who died in a crash when DPS troopers attempted to take another man into custody on Interstate 10 near Tempe Monday evening.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said troopers responded to reports of a man in the westbound lanes of the highway near Warner Road around 8:30 p.m. When troopers attempted to detain the suspect, officials say he ran across the lanes, jumped the median and was struck by a car on the east side.

A short time later, a scuffle broke out between the officer and the suspect. Around the same time, a crash between two other, unrelated vehicles ended in the death of a passenger in one of those vehicles, DPS spokesman Warrant Trent said.

He has been identified as 40-year-old Peter Stump of Chandler.

Drivers of both vehicles were also injured, police said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment. His name has not been released, but DPS says he is a 34-year-old man from Glendale and will be charged when he is released.
