One arrested, one in general, after incident at Haverhill McDonalds

One person was arrested and a second remained on the run Tuesday evening after their vehicle struck a police officer near a McDonald’s in Haverhill and an officer fired his weapon, authorities said.

Police approached two people in a car near the Main Street restaurant at 11:38 a.m., Essex District Attorney Paul F. Tucker’s office said.

The driver backed into several police vehicles, hitting one officer and then plowing into the other officers, prosecutors said in a statement.

An officer shot at the car, which fled the scene, according to the statement.

Police pursued the vehicle to Lawrence, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle.

The driver was arrested shortly afterwards and taken to a hospital with injuries, the statement said. According to the statement, the second resident is still on the run.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, the driver has not been identified.
