Comal County begins construction on a new women’s shelter

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – New Braunfels is taking another step to support survivors of domestic violence by creating a new shelter.

Today, the concrete was poured for that shelter, which would be called the Comal County Crisis Center.

The shelter is expected to be 30,000 square feet in size and accommodate 90 women and children. This comes after the first shelter was destroyed by fire in 2022.

The organizers say: it’s about giving the victims a safe place.

“Right now, when people call a hotline in Texas, it’s a 50/50 split as to whether they’ll find a place to stay,” says Dr. Julie Strenzsch, CEO of the Crisis Center. “By adding this space, we are ensuring they have a place to stay that is safe and free from damage.”

Last year, more than 200 people were murdered by an intimate partner, with guns used in 63 percent of those murders.

The youngest victim was 15.
