A truck snags lines, causing poles to fall and damage to homes on Kailua Road

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Repairs are underway after a semi-truck caused a chain reaction mess along Kailua Road on Tuesday.

It happened in the Kailua-bound lanes near Kalanianaole Highway and Adventist Health Castle hospital around 1 p.m.

Hawaiian Telcom said the truck downed the lines and six poles between Ulukahiki and Uluoa streets. Both lanes of Kailua Road into Kailua were closed for several hours.

Nighttime lane closures necessary for restoration and repairs

The left lane of Kailua Road entering the city of Kailua opened at 4:30 p.m. However, Kailua Road between Ulukahiki and Uluoa streets will be closed beginning at approximately 8 p.m. so crews can work on restoration and repairs overnight.

Service to customers in Kailua, Waimanalo and Hawaii Kai may be affected.

The road will reopen to morning traffic, Hawaiian Telcom said.

“We’re very lucky.” Residents investigate damage to their home

The incident caused a pole to land on the roof of Rheanna Stancil-Williams’ home. She said she was having lunch with her family when it happened.

“We were actually just coming home from Windward Mall, and as we were driving up Kailua Road, we saw the poles at the park. And as we drove by, we saw the post on our house,” she said.

Stancil-Williams said her roof is now damaged.

“The post is leaning on our gutter and you can see it has dented into the roof a bit,” she said. “There’s a pole sticking out of the utility pole that was actually attached to our wall, so that really helped with the impact of the hit on our roof.

“We didn’t experience the impact when we were home, so we’re very lucky,” Stancil-Williams said.

Incident is being investigated

The truck is owned by Island Distributing, owned by Reyes Beverage Group. There was a Pasha container inside.

Reyes Beverage Group said in a statement:

“We are aware of an incident that occurred earlier today in Oahu involving one of our trucks. We are grateful no one was injured and are working closely with local authorities to investigate the matter. We will take appropriate action based on our findings.”
