Jordaan granted bail after arrest for fraud and theft

Jordaan, who led South Africa’s successful bid to host the 2010 World Cup, denied the allegations in a Johannesburg court.

“The allegations are that the president of SAFA used the organization’s resources for his personal gain between 2014 and 2018,” a police statement said.

He was accused of hiring a private security company for his own protection and a public relations company without the approval of the SAFA board, the statement said.

Jordaan, 73, is said to have hired the PR agency after his reputation took a hit when a South African singer and former MP alleged in 2017 that he had sexually abused her 25 years earlier. He denied the accusations.

Police said he was arrested “following an intensive investigation by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, based in Johannesburg, into allegations of fraud and theft of R1.3 million.”

Jordaan has been president of SAFA since 2013 and was elected for the third time in 2022.

He was arrested along with SAFA finance director Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, head of the communications company named in the indictment, who also denied the charges.

The court released the three on bail of R20,000.
