Kenosha parents and students are raising concerns about school safety and demanding action

KENOSHA – Parents and students expressed concerns about school safety during a Kenosha Unified School district board meeting Tuesday evening.

They demanded that the district take action and implement stricter security changes as several schools in the area do not have secure entrances. This move comes after a The 13-year-old brought an airsoft gun to Roosevelt Elementary School last week.

Parents demanded changes to make school entrances safer, including adding metal detectors and more security at entrances.

“You have failed, not only hundreds of children in the community, but this is a safety issue,” Kristina Delgado said. “I hope and pray that change will come, not only for my child, but for the community.”

Delgado is one of those concerned parents, she spoke on stage on Tuesday. She reminded school officials that the only focus should be on the safety of the children in the community, including her own.

“You have hundreds of innocent children who don’t know their surroundings, so it’s your job to protect the children and make sure they’re safe,” Delgado said.

Addison Murphy, a KUSD student, said she hopes the district listens to their concerns and increases safety measures.

“I just want our schools to increase that security to make sure we know we’re safe in more ways than they can show,” Murphy said.

Several parents said they will continue to push for more changes until they see action.

One idea discussed tonight was a school referendum in February next year. That could provide the funding needed to address safety issues at schools across the district.
