What We Do In The Shadows' Matt Berry Explains Why He's Ready For The Show To End: 'Six Seasons Is A Long Time'

No one could have imagined in 2014 that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi‘s horror comedy What we do in the shadows would spawn several spin-offs and ultimately give British comedy genius Matt Berry the American adoration he deserves. And here we are ten years later, with FX’s vampire mockumentary series almost ready to deliver possibly the bloodiest series ending ever. TV program 2024. Viewers like me certainly aren’t ready to say goodbye just yet, but the same can’t be said for Berry himself.

Even though there have clearly been other popular TV mockumentaries and horror comedies over the years, What we do in the shadows is consistently different from anything else on the small screen, and that’s because there is much we will miss when it is gone. So perhaps we can all take solace in knowing that Berry’s willingness to put the series in his rearview mirror is about maintaining that higher quality without falling victim to mediocrity. The worst thing you can do with a comedy is outstay its welcome. Things can be ruined by hanging on for too long, because people can get tired of you and take a dim view of the work you’ve done so far. Whereas if you let go at the right time, it’s quite a legacy. You know that what you left behind is of good quality.

I think we can all think of at least one hugely popular show that is credited with airing new seasons well past its peak, bringing to mind another famous mockumentary. To that end, though, it seems nice It’s always sunny in Philadelphia have proven that a top-level status quo can still be maintained, even if a series lasts more than 15 seasons. I am true to that Shadows would be just as funny and inventive if it were still airing in 2034, but it’s a moot point.

Berry continued, saying he hopes others share his opinion that the FX series has held up its end of the quality agreement for all six seasons. In his words:

Six seasons is a long time. And hopefully when people watch the show and all the different seasons, they won’t think, “Oh God, this went downhill” or “This isn’t as good as it used to be.” The hope is that it’s all of a reasonably good standard of quality

While the first season goes through some of the same early struggles as other shows trying to nail down their characters and tone, it doesn’t take long for Laszlo & Co. becomes a well-oiled comedy machine. (Probably more blood and guts than oil specifically, but still.) And as the lore and history of the vampire begins to reveal itself and Kristen Schaal hilariously enters the fray as The Guide, Shadows running on all cylinders.

Speaking specifically to Matt Berry, the actor remains as funny now as he was during his early years. The Dark Place by Garth Marenghi And Snuff box. So by the simple nature of it being on What we do in the shadowsquality declines are virtually impossible. But we will still grudgingly accept that it turns into a bat and flies away very quickly.

Not that the Toast of London vet will go away forever or something. The soft sounds of Matt Berry will be part of the voice cast for the animated Cat in the hat movie that Bill Hader is coming, and he will also be heard in both upcoming video game adaptation The Minecraft Movie and Duncan Jones’ animated science fiction Rogue Trooper.
