The No. 1 Oregon ducks travel 3,000 miles to Madison, Wisconsin for a Big Ten matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday, November 16 at 4:30 PM PT. It will be Oregon coach Dan Lanning’s first time to Madison, WI and Camp Randall Stadium.

It’s a memorable game because a win would move Oregon to 11-0 for just the second time in program history and join the 2010 team.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning evaluated his teams’ practices as the Ducks prepare for the Badgers and the first-year starting quarterback Braedyn Locke.

Coach Lanning also discussed an injury update for running back Jordan James and defensive end Jordan Burch.

“I’m just going to keep evaluating them to see if they’re available,” Lanning said. “We’ve had those guys helping us. So we’ll see what it looks like.”

An important point of attention this week is limiting punishments. The Ducks committed twelve penalties for 95 yards vs. Maryland, both season highs. Coach Lanning is pleased with the improved focus on penalty clearances.

“We had five today,” Lanning said after Wednesday’s practice. “Last Wednesday we had thirteen, so it was cleaner. But it can still be cleaner than it is.”

“(The secondary) wears boxing gloves all week. That helped,” Lanning said.

Lanning on motivating his team:

“The everyday is very important in our sport. You have to be able to do the simple things consistently, over and over again. I think the challenge for you as a coach is: how can you make the everyday interesting. How can you keep saying we’re going to do things that are really simple but keep it fresh for our players? So that is always our challenge.”

Lanning on which coaches he studied for motivational techniques:

“Gallimaufry. We will take from everywhere, everything we see, try to use that as motivation.

Lanning on attention to detail this week:

“Today’s Wednesday training was much better than last Wednesday. But there is still plenty of room for growth.”

Lanning on Oregon’s defensive end, Matayo Uiagalelei’s impact:

“He is an impactful player. I had high expectations for him when he came here and he has exceeded those expectations with the way he has worked. It’s a really good room, that outside linebacker room. He certainly plays a big role in that.”

Lanning’s biggest area of growth over the last eight games:

“Just playing as a team. Playing uniquely as a team. I think there’s been a lot of growth in those moments where we have each other’s six – have each other’s back – in moments. I think that shows up consistently, whether it’s saving the offense the defense or the defense saving the offense or special teams coming up with a big play and really focusing on the next play.

Matayo Uiagalelei leads the team in sacks – what is his ceiling?

“He is incredibly talented. It starts there. And I think that room is very well coached, but he works very hard to pick up the details and execute. He has a plan. Our entire front has a rush plan every week and part of that is, how do we attack it? The number one sack getter in any league, in any football division, is effort. So you have to put maximum effort in every rush, because there is always someone ready to block you. You have to beat that block.”

Lanning on what stands out about Wisconsin defensive lineman Elijah Hills:

Lanning: “Twitch. He has a great twitch. And again I think a lot of their production comes from their defense, it’s hand in hand, it works together. Their coverage allows them to apply pressure up front and they have some guys who do really well in selection games up front.
