When Trinity McGloster began considering her college options, one school jumped to the top of her list.
Taking up a sport she loves is an added bonus.
McGloster, a senior from Vicksburg, announced Wednesday that she has signed to play softball Jackson State University. She will continue a family tradition — several relatives attended school there — in addition to playing Division I softball and earning a degree in biomedical engineering.
“Jackson State, regardless of sports, that was my No. 1 school because I went for academics first,” McGloster said. “When he made me the offer, I of course knew that this was a given. This is where I wanted to go.”
McGloster has played various positions for Vicksburg High over the course of five varsity seasons. She hit .375 last season, with nine doubles, 14 RBIs and 15 runs scored, and was selected for The Vicksburg Post All-County Team. Jackson State recruited her as a middle infielder and utility player.
However, softball is not her only sport. She is also an excellent football player and was one The Post’s 2022 Warren County Player of the Year.
McGloster said she was also recruited by the football coaches at Jackson State and Alcorn State, but decided she liked softball more.
“It was (hard to decide) at first, but then I knew my love was deeper for softball than football, so that made my decision,” McGloster said. “Softball takes me out of my headspace. It’s one of those things I do and it takes me out of reality. It relaxes me. It calms me down. Softball is what I wanted to do.”
Doing it at the Division I college level is something else she has wanted to do for a long time. McGloster made the varsity lineups for both of her sports as a seventh-grader and has since been one of the top athletes in Warren County.
It was a good feeling to know her athletics career will continue at the next level, she said.
“It’s very wonderful. This has been a dream of mine since I started playing softball. I knew when I went into seventh grade and started college, this is what I want to do in college,” McGloster said. “I worked hard and put a lot of dedication into this and I finally achieved that dream.”
McGloster thanked God, her family and her coaches for their love and support over the years. Although she said family members who attended JSU — some of whom attended the signing ceremony at VHS on Wednesday — didn’t pressure her to go there, they didn’t mind the decision either.
“They are happy. They are very happy,” she says laughing.
