Surfside Beach votes to keep the fire department in town

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The Surfside Beach City Council voted Tuesday in favor of keeping the fire department in-house and opted not to contract with Horry County Fire Rescue.

“We largely matched whatever the county would give us in terms of staffing,” said Surfside Beach Fire Chief David Nelson.

Several months ago, city leaders had debated the idea after identifying a $2 million budget shortfall, including staffing shortages and the need for new or improved equipment.

Nelson said after filling several vacancies, trust in the fire department grew.

“The city was very supportive of that, as was the council,” Nelson said.

In the future, three people would man the device and one additional person would operate the antenna.

“That will help with our ISO and PPC rating,” Nelson said.

The positive changes have left many residents relieved.

“We pay taxes to care for and support our fire brigade. I think we should keep it internal,” said Lauren LaMora.

Paul Richardson has lived in Surfside Beach for 25 years and said he hasn’t needed emergency services, but is glad to hear they will stay.

“I’m just glad they’re staying here. We’ve never had to call them, but it’s nice to know they’re close,” he said.

The department has also increased the number of volunteers helping out.

“Our volunteers have grown. We went from five volunteers who were indoor firefighters to nine now. We have four more in the class,” Nelson said.

We have been told that there will be no further discussions regarding contract options surrounding the fire service.
