The Wall Street Journal is testing summaries of AI articles

The Wall Street Journal is experimenting with AI-generated article summaries appearing at the top of their news stories. The summaries appear as a “Key Points” box with bullet points that summarize the piece. The edge saw the test on a story about Trump’s plans for the Department of Education, and the Magazine confirmed that it is testing the feature to see how readers respond.

In the ‘Key points’ box, there is a message explaining that an ‘artificial intelligence tool created this summary’ and that the summary has been reviewed by an editor. The box also links to a page on how to use the WJ and Dow Jones Newswires use AI tools.

“We are constantly assessing new technologies and storytelling methods to deliver more value to our subscribers,” said Taneth Evans, Head of Digital at the WJsays in a statement to The edge. “To this end, we are currently conducting a series of A/B tests to understand our users’ summarization needs. The newsroom does this hand-in-hand with colleagues in technology, speaking to readers every step of the way. Us too reveal how we use artificial intelligence tools to support our journalism wherever it is used.”
