Suriya’s performance and visuals

Apart from the film’s visuals, Suriya’s performance as Kanguva and Francis seemed to receive positive feedback. An impressed fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Kanguva rating is 4/5. Screen > better. Dramatic, insane. The longest but best story. Action packed… Ooooo goosebumps. All over history (goat emoji) @Suriya_offl.”

Another fan listed their highlights in the first half of the film and wrote: “#Kanguva First half highlights. Special title card for Suriya. – Banger & Stylish Suriya entry – Yolo dance from the combo – Social, unreleased elevation song from DSP – Fire Song Visuals – Emotional Interval Sequence – Solid Combat Sections.

Another fan also praised Suriya’s performance and the film’s visuals and wrote, “Positive: Suriya’s performance: Great dual role portrayal with powerful screen presence. Visual Effects: VFX quality enhances the grandeur of the film, especially in the epic scenes. Crocodile scene: an exciting, striking action scene that leaves a strong impression. They used a covering face emoji while describing Disha’s role in the film.

One fan even pointed out that there was a ‘surprise cameo’ in the film, writing, ‘Suriya’s portrayal of Kanguva is explosive and intense. Action choreography is top notch. The surprise cameo is amazing. The cinematography and costume design are impressive,” adding, “Overall verdict: A decent action drama with notable highs but also significant lows.”

Francis portions are not impressive

One fan wrote that Kanguva is worth watching only for Suriya even if the Francis portions are not impressive: “#Suriya has shed his blood and sweat for this film and it is clearly visible on screen but the story should have even more support for it.#BobbyDeol a little supported. Total #Kanguva portions are goosebumps but not impressive #Francis.#DSP BGM Kaadhu valikidhu. Only for Suriya.”

Another person also agreed that despite the grand visuals, the film needed to be better, as did the parts with Francis: “#Kanguva was visually grand and the music and songs were excellent in the theater!! @Suriya_offl has carried the film on his shoulders in the Kanguva world. The Francis part and the accompanying comedy were terrible. The movie gets very tiring towards the end.

Lacks emotional connection, is noisy

One person wrote that Suriya is not enough to save Kanguva“Surya does well in his role and his efforts should be appreciated, but it is difficult to salvage a script like this with just a performance.” They also added: “The emotional connectivity required for a film like this is completely missing. Director Siva partially holds the screenplay together in the first half, but loses it in the second half, making it difficult to sit through after a point.”

Some thought the characters were loud and the film team was trying to cover up some sloppy visuals: “All the characters, including Surya, scream at a high pitch all the time, which was too much to get past a point. To cover up the flaws in CG work, the team gave a smoke effect throughout the film that was overwhelming.

One person agreed that while the story had potential and Suriya performed well, it needed to be better, listing among the negatives ‘-Loud and missed Bgm by #Dsp -clumsy performance by #Siva -Excessive crying becomes annoying’ .

“Perfect example of why good content is needed, not just the visuals #Kanguva aa post-credit scene lekapoyunte cinema eto poyedi my review: 1.5/5 (without the post-credit scene the movie would have been a total loss),” summed up a disappointed fan together.

About Kanguva

Kanguva sees Suriya playing a warrior from the past with the titular name and a modern-day man named Francis in the present. Bobby also plays a warrior in the past Disha plays his love interest in the present. If the film’s trailer is to be believed, it’s a story about reincarnation with a child at the center of it all. With shows in Tamil Nadu starting at 9 am, it remains to be seen if the film will get better reviews later in the day.
