One dead after two explosions near Brazil’s Supreme Court, prompting evacuations

Brazil’s Supreme Court was evacuated on Wednesday after two explosions occurred near the building, killing the suspected bomber, according to Brazilian officials.

The first explosion, which took place in a square near Congress and the presidential palace, occurred at 7:30 PM local time. The second explosion occurred outside the Supreme Court when the suspect attempted to enter the building. CNN reports this.

The bombings are being investigated as a suicide bombing, and there are no other suspects, Celina Leão, the deputy governor of the Federal District, told reporters. She also recommended closing the country’s Congress on Thursday with great caution. according to United Press International.

The country’s Supreme Court judges were all evacuated on Wednesday evening and the Three Powers Plaza, where all three branches of Brazil’s government are located, was sealed off. The investigation into the attack is still ongoing and the motive for the explosions is not clear.

The bombings take place five days before Brazil hosts the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. The attack has raised security concerns ahead of the summit. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also expected to visit Brazil on November 20.
