What the College Football Playoff Committee said about Boise State’s drop to No. 13

What the College Football Playoff Committee said about Boise State’s drop to No. 13

Last weekend, Boise State Football had a better result than many expected. The Broncos defeated a Nevada team by three wins 28-21improving to 8-1 this season.

After the narrow victory, the Broncos were reinstated in Tuesday’s final College Football Playoff rankings. However, they dropped one spot from #12 to #13.

In a conference call following the unveiling of the rankings, Warde Manuel, Michigan Athletic director and chairman of the CFP Selection Committee, commented G5 Football daily about Boise State’s most recent performance and where they landed in this week’s rankings.

“Well, you know, they obviously beat Nevada, and they’ve had a great season. I think when you look at it, in terms of where they fell once, that has more to do with how teams played who were above them.” .”

As Manuel noted, the committee did not attribute Boise State’s slight decline to their own performance, but saw fit to rank other teams above them because of the magnitude of those results – specifically Ole Miss’ upset over Georgia. Ole Miss was previously ranked No. 16, but was moved up to No. 11. Georgia was previously ranked No. 3, but moved down to No. 12.

“It wasn’t that Boise State didn’t have a good win. It was more in the analysis of how everything fell, where the teams were in front of them and who was sliding in different directions, and then obviously Ole Miss had a great win against Georgia and went based on the committee’s evaluation ahead of Boise State.

Even at #13, Boise State would still make the playoffs as they win the Mountain West Conference championship. The highest-ranked G5 conference champion would automatically receive the #12 seed if ranked outside the top 12.

The Broncos return to action this week against San Jose State on CBS Sports Network at 4:00 PM PST, 5:00 PM MT.
